LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The No. 54 University of Hawai'i women's tennis team was defeated 5-2 by No. 41 Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon at the Rhodes Tennis Center in Long Beach, Calif.

The 49ers took the early lead as they won two out of the three doubles matches. On the  No. 2 court the Beach's Karolina Rozenberg and Laura Eales beat UH's Cindy Nguyen and Klara Pribylova, 8-2. The 49ers No. 3 pair of Maeva Razakasoa and Julie Gerard controlled the match against the `Bows' Sarah Gealer and Rebecca Faltusz, 8-2 to capture the first point of the match. The lone win came from the No.1 UH pair of Paulina Petriskova and Martina Kostalova defeating Long Beach's Ebba Unden and Hayley Thompson, 8-5.

In singles, LBSU took the opening four matches to seal the win with the No. 4 and No.2 slots finishing first with Julie Gerard beating beating Gealer, 6-0, 6-1, and Ebba Unden besting Viktoria Malova, 7-5, 6-1. The 49ers clinched the win when Hayley Thompson held off Kostalova on the No. 3 court, 6-2, 6-2, and Karolina Rozenberg defeating Petriskova, 6-2, 6-4. But Hawai`i did not go down without a fight. Nguyen pulled off a win in straight sets against No. 99 Maeva Razakasoa, 6-3, 7-5 and Faltusz battling back to win in a thrilling three set affair, 7-6 (5), 0-6, 10-5. 

Hawai`i returns home and will next play Big West opponent, UC Irvine in a conference match on Feb. 21 at the UH Tennis Complex starting at 11:00 a.m. (HT).
