A long time coming...
Currently Hawai'i sits atop the Big West alone in first place. Two years ago, in their first year back in the Big West, UH defeated Pacific in overtime in Honolulu to claim a share of the conference lead with the Tigers for one week (Feb. 16, 2013).
The last time Hawai'i had sole possesion of a conference lead was in 1997-98 when UH led the Western Athletic Conference's Pacific Division for the last eight weeks to end the season No. 1. That was also the last season the Rainbow Wahine went to the NCAA tournament--and that was 496 games ago.
Prior to that, Hawai'i finished the last two weeks of the Big West seasons in 1992-93 and 1993-94 in first place. The 1993-94 team took UH to their third NCAA tournament appearance.
Our average attendance (tickets issued) right now is 1,811--which is the most since the 2001-02 season averaged 1,828.
Defense and Rebounding Rules
Hawai'i has seen its defense solidify and its rebounding improve as the season has gone on, and it is especially evident in the way that UH has started the conference season. Overall, UH leads the conference in field goal percent defense (.371) with a league-best 8.2 rebounding margin. Hawai'i leads the Big West in offensive and defensive rebounds and rebounding percentage.
In conference, UH has been more dominant. The 'Bows are tops in the league with a 9.7 scoring margin and No. 1 in scoring defense allowing teams just 57.3 points per game. UH also leads the BWC in rebounding offense (45.3); rebounding defense (33.2); rebounding margin ( 12.1); offensive rebounds (15.9); defensive rebounds (29.40); defensive rebounding percentage (.766) and offensive rebounding percentage (.397).
Cal State Fullerton (9-13, 3-6 Big West)The Titans enter this week with a 9-13 overall record and a 3-6 mark in conference. They have lost six of their last seven games. But on Thursday night, the Titans fell in a tightly contested matchup with UC Davis at Titan Gym, 74-67, behind 27 points from the Aggies' Sydnee Fipps and 16 points from Alyson Doherty.Fullerton's senior Chante Miles poured in a game-high 33 points, falling two points shy of her career-high point total of 35 set earlier this year on Nov. 24 in a win at Weber State. Miles was the only player tonight for either team to go the complete 45 minutes without a rest while dishing out two assists and grabbing five rebounds.
CSF is led by Miles who is averaging 20.1 points per game. She leads the Titans with 102 assists and is second on the team with 29 steals. Miles also has made 62 3-pointers and 85 free throws--both team-highs. Kathleen Iwuoha is the other Titan averaging double-digits in scoring with 11.9 points per game.
