SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The 54th-ranked University of Hawai'i women's tennis team edged out San Diego at the Skip and Cindy Tennis Center today in San Diego, California, 4-3. With the match tied at 3-3, Cindy Nguyen came through with a clutch three-set win to capture the victory for the 'Bows.

The Toreros took the early lead as they won two out of the three doubles matches for the first point of the day. On the No. 3 court UH's Sarah Gealer and Rebecca Faltusz beat USD's Carly Naslund and Marisa Marsh, 8-1. The Torero's No. 2 pair of Marta Stojanovic and Shani Blecher controlled the match against the 'Bows' Cindy Nguyen and Viktoria Malova, 8-5. It came down to the No. 1 court where the `Bows' Martina Kostalova and Paulina Petriskova battled USD's Drew Spinosa and Dana Oppinger, but fell in a tight match, 8-6, which secured the doubles point for the Torero's. 

The `Bows would strike back in singles, winning four of the six matches to earn the victory. UH's Faltusz cruised passed USD's Marsh, 6-0, 6-1, while Petriskova defeated the Torero's Naslund, 6-0, 6-2. USD would make a come back with Blecher defeating UH's Gealer 6-2, 6-4 and Spinosa winning over UH's Kostalova 6-4, 6-2, giving the Torero's a 3-2 lead. In the No. 2 singles, Malova battled against USD's Dana Oppinger, and won in an intense-three set match, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to tie the score 3-3. It all came down to the sophomore Nguyen who battled the Torero's Stojanovic. Nguyen dropped the first set, but bounced back with a solid performance winning it last two sets to lift UH to the win, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. 

The `Bows are set to play against Big West opponent, No. 41 Long Beach State on Saturday, Feb. 14 in Long Beach, Calif. at 11:00 a.m. (PT).
