Meet ResultsRIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's cross country moved up two places over last season, placing seventh at the Big West Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning at the Agricultural Operations Course located near the UC Riverside campus.
The Rainbow Wahine totaled 186 points in the 6k race—a 72-point improvement over 2014's race--and were led by sophomore
Montana Martinez for the second consecutive season. Martinez moved up 19 spots to place 22nd in 21:36.72, missing her career record by only 10 seconds.
The Rainbow Wahine finished ninth in the meet in both of the past two years.
"Excellent efforts and a big step forward for our cross country program this morning," cross country coach
Tim Boyce said. "Montana again raced really well and was supported by a strong team effort. Our team average was nearly 1:20 faster per person than on the same course last year."
Junior
Alli Cross was next for the Rainbow Wahine, finishing 37th at 22:10.74, also narrowly missing a career best. She also finished ahead of last year's top UH placement. Making her first jump into the UH scoring top three, freshman
Sabrina Sterbis ran 22:22.42 for a 43rd-place finish. Classmate
Camille Campos was 47th in 22:38.20, while junior
Caitlyn Foss rounded out the scorers at 50th in 22:49.14.
Also running for UH, freshman
Haley Beaumont was 53rd in 22:58.75, freshman
Tristan Setzer was 64th in 23:48.63 and
Jade Vaughan was 71st in 25:55.78.
Cal Poly collected the team title, logging all five of their scorers in the top 11 with 39 points. Running on her home course, UC Riverside's Faith Makau earned the individual title with a time of 20:27.50, beating out CP's Peyton Bilo at 20:36.87.
Qualifying Rainbow Wahine runners will next compete in the NCAA West Regionals, Friday, Nov. 13 in Seattle, Wash. UH ran one meet, the Sundodger Invitational, in Seattle earlier this season.
"We're excited to take this group to Regionals in Seattle and already looking forward to hosting the 2016 Big West Championship," Boyce added.
