Meet ResultsSACRAMENTO — A new leader rose to the forefront for the Rainbow Wahine, as
Alli Cross paced the University of Hawai'i women's cross country team to a sixth-place finish at the Capital Cross Challenge on Saturday at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex.
The Lane College transfer, Cross (Tualatin, Ore.) took the lead for UH, coming down the chute in 18th place with a career-best mark of 17:44.7—not only a personal best, but the best for UH since Ashley Aitken in the 2010 season.
In a tight race, all five scorers for the Rainbow Wahine finished within a minute of each other, with sophomore
Montana Martinez crossing the line in 23rd on a career-best time of 17:57.3. The reigning 2015 UH leader,
Camille Campos finished with a season-best time of 18:04.1 for 29th place. Also coming within three seconds of the best prior 5k time for UH this season, while dropping two minutes off her own best, junior
Caitlyn Foss cross came in at 18:34.1 for 50th place. Freshman
Piper McDonald rounded out the scoring group in 56th place with a personal-best mark of 18:44.1.
"We're very pleased by and proud of the efforts of our entire group today," cross country coach
Tim Boyce said. It was a big lifetime best for Alli—even faster than her track PR. Montana showed she's regaining her form and Camille had another excellent race with nearly a thirty second PR. "
"Caitlyn had the biggest breakthrough on the day, her best cross country 5k by nearly 1:30, also faster than her track PR," Boyce added. "Piper has been gradually recovering from sickness and Haley was a bit less than 100 percent, yet both ran hard and everyone contributed to a very positive day for this young team."
Also competing and drawing within 18 seconds of the UH season high, freshman
Haley Beaumont was 63rd in 18:52.4
Chloe Berlioux from host Sacramento State claimed the individual title, earning gold with a time of 16:36.4. Meanwhile, in the team rankings, Loyola Marymount captured the team title with a score of 39, ahead of Cal (51) in second, Nevada (81) in third, Sacramento State (99) in fourth and San Diego (139), with the Rainbow Wahine logging 158 points for sixth. Trailing UH was Pepperdine (179), UC Davis (231), Pacific (244) and Saint Mary's (CA) with 246 points.
The Rainbow Wahine move beyond the season's midpoint next week with a third local meet on the island of O'ahu, as the Chaminade Invitational will be held on Oct. 10 and has been moved to Kapi'olani Regional Park just beyond the edge of Diamond Head on the isle's south shore.
