Box Score (html)HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team battled valiantly against the Big West Conference's lone unbeaten team but came up empty in a 1-0 loss to CSUN on Sunday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The 'Bows (3-11-1, 0-5 BWC) had several excellent opportunities down the stretch as they pushed for the equalizer, including one last gasp off a
Storm Kenui corner kick, but the ball would never find the back of the net as the Matadors (10-5-1, 3-0-1 BWC) moved into second place in the conference.
Neither team could muster much in the way of chances early in the match until CSUN rifled a few shots on goalkeeper
Erica Young who swallowed them up with little trouble. Late in the half though Young would get tested. She came off her line to handle a service into the box, then made a point blank save on a well struck shot just inside the top of the penalty box.
The first half ended in a scoreless draw but CSUN broke the stalemate less than seven minutes into the second half. Kristin Von Meter was able to find Breanna McCallum centrally just outside the goal box who tapped her shot past Young into the back of the net.
The goal proved to be all the Matadors would need and, as the second half wore on, their speed proved to be too much for Hawai'i handle, getting down the flanks with regularity.
UH's best chance came in the 66
th minute when
Nici Lopez played
Kellsie Gleason into the box who lifted a shot to the far post that glanced off the top of the crossbar and out of bounds.
The 'Bows now head to the mainland for their final road trip of the season. UH plays at UC Davis on Thursday, Oct. 22 and at Long Beach State the following Sunday.
