LAHAINA, Mau'i--The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team opened the 2015 season with day one of the Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational against No. 2 Duke and No. 7 California at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch on Thursday afternoon. 

In doubles play, Hawai'i's lone win came from junior Paulina Petriskova and freshmen Viktoria Malova. The UH pair had a slow start trailing 0-3, but came back firing to win in a tight match 6-4.  Hawai'i's Rebecca Faltusz and Martina Kostalova were defeated by California's Cecilia Estlander and Lyann Hoang 6-1, while Sarah Gealer and Cindy Nguyen fell to Duke's Annie Mulholland and Ester Goldfeld 6-2. Junior Daisy Green and freshmen Klara Pribylova dropped their doubles contest against Duke's Rebecca Smaller and Alyssa Smith, 6-1. 

In singles action, UH's Malova battled hard against Duke's 55th-ranked Samantha Harris, but dropped in a tight two-set match 6-4, 6-2. Nguyen fought hard against Duke's Beatrice Capra, but fell in a three-set match, 6-0, 2-6, 6-1, while Gealer also fell in a close three-set match against California's Cecilia Estlander 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Hawai'i's only singles win came from senior Martina Kostalova, who defeated California's Lyann Hoang 7-6 (4), 6-2. 

On Friday, Jan. 9, UH will begin day two of the Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational at 12:00 p.m. at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch.
