Mosley-McAfee Jersey Retirement Ceremony

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team avenged their early season loss at CSUN with a solid, wire-to-wire, 64-49 win over the Matadors on Saturday night. Hawai'i used a 12-to-0 run that ended the first half to propel them into the second half where led by as many as 22 points. Destiny King led all scorers with 15 points—her fifth straight game in double digits—while Megan Huff recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Hawai'i improved to 13-7 overall and 5-2 in conference. CSUN fell to 14-8 overall and 4-4 in conference. The win pushes the 'Bows into a tie at 5-2 with Long Beach State for second place in the Big West standings. Cal Poly is a half game ahead of both teams at 6-2.

The win was Hawai'i's fifth straight--the longest win streak under head coach Laura Beeman and the longest streak since the 2006-07 season when the 'Bows tallied eight in a row. 
 
Hawai'i jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the game, but CSUN responded on a 6-0 run of their own to cut their deficit one point at 12-11 with 1:27 left in the half. But Hawai`i fend off the Matadors and eventually finished the half on a 12-to-0 run while the Rainbow Wahine defense shut CSUN down as they shot 0-for-11 to finish the half. UH took a 16 point lead into the break, 35-19. In the second half, Hawai'i's defense remained locked in while the offense kept scoring to keep the Matadors at bay with a double-digit lead the entire half.
 
Hawai'i's defense buckled down to hold the Matadors to 17.7 points below their overall season average. UH held the reigning Big West Player of the Week and defending Player of the Year, Ashlee Guay to just six points—her second lowest point total of the year—nine points below her season average. The Rainbow Wahine dominated on the glass, out-rebounding CSUN 54-to-34. The 54 rebounds tied the team's season high set in the opener at Colorado State. UH outscored CSUN, 34-to-20 in the paint and 12-to-8 in second chance points.
 
King led UH in scoring for the fifth time this season. She has tallied double-digits in points in six of UH's seven conference games. She shot 3-for-11 from the floor and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. The nine made free throws are a career-high for the junior from Long Beach, Calif.
 
Huff shot 4-of-7 in field goals and was 3-for-3 from the charity stripe for her 11 points. She also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and tied her career-high with five blocked shots which she set in UH's first game against the Matadors.
 
Ashleigh Karaitiana added 10 points with two rebounds and two assists.
 
CSUN's Janae Sharpe led the Matadors with 14 points and Jasmine Johnson had a team-high six rebounds.
 
Hawai'i continues their four-game conference homestand on Thursday, Feb. 5 against UC Santa Barbara.
 
During halftime of the game, Rainbow Wahine great, Judy Mosley-McAfee, became the first athlete to have their jersey retired in the Stan Sheriff Center. Mosley-McAfee was a two-time All-American honorable mention and the most decorated player in UH history. She is UH's all-time career record holder with 2,479 points and 1,441 rebounds. She holds over 20 records at UH and was the first Rainbow Wahine to lead the team in points and rebounds all four years she played. Mosley-McAfee passed away on September 16, 2013 after a three-year battle with cancer.
 
Rainbow Wahine alumna Keiki Dawn Izumi was recognized as the team's honorary captain before the game. Izumi was a member of the inaugural Rainbow Wahine basketball team and has been a long-time supporter of the program.
 
Prior to the game between UH and CSUN, the Rainbow Wahine hosted their annual Alumnae Game. The Green Team defeated the White team, 45-39. Saundra Cariaga, who played for UH from 2005-08, led all scorers with 20 points.
