Women's Hoops Heads To UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif.-The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (10-7, 2-2 Big West) stays in Californiato take on UC Irvine (3-15, 0-3 BWC) on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 2:00 p.m.

The Rainbow Wahine got their first conference road win on Thursday night with a 58-53 come-from-behind victory at UC Davis. UH evened their BWC record to 2-2. The Aggies started the second half with a 26-23 lead and quickly extended that to a 10-point, 35-25 lead with 17:37 left in the game. But Hawai'i came charging back, going on a 10-to-0 run of their own to knot the score at 35-35 with 13:10 on the clock. The game saw nine ties and 12 lead changes, but down the stretch, UH was able to keep the Aggies at bay.Destiny King led UH, tying her career-high with 17 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine. Ashleigh Karaitiana came through scoring 11 of her 13 points in the second half while Megan Huff was a bucket short of recording a double-double with eight points and a career-high 13 rebounds.

Defensively, Hawai'i worked hard to hold the Aggies to 12 points under their season average of 65.3 points per game. UC Davis was ranked No. 4 in the NCAA in three-point percentage (.393) and No. 10 in 3-pointers per game (8.6), but the 'Bows challenged the Aggies all game long, holding them to 33.3% from behind the arch and to just 3-of-9 from 3-point range. Hawai'i also held the nation's top-ranked 3-point shooter, Kelsey Harris to just one point for the game. She had been leading the NCAA for four consecutive weeks with a 50% 3-point field goal average, but the 'Bows held her to 0-for-4 on the night--0-for-3 from the 3-point line.

Overall, Kuehu continues to lead Hawai'i averaging 12.7 points and 7.0 rebounds and 20 blockedshots. But she has come off the bench the past two games as she continues to deal with a lingering injury. Karaitiana is averaging 10.9 points a game with 6.0 rebounds and a team-high 26 steals.Morgan Mason is close behind with 9.9 points a game to go with a team-high 43 assists. As a team, Hawai'i is tied for the league lead with a 4.9 rebounding margin average. The 'Bows are also tops in the BWC with 43.4 rebounding offense.

UC Irvine (3-16, 0-4 Big West)
The Anteaters are looking to snap their four-game losing streak to start conference play. UC Irvine is 3-16 overall and 0-4 in conference with Mokun Fajemisin leading the way averaging a team-high 11.0 points and 7.3 rebounds. She is also leads UCI with 29 blocked shots and is one of two players to have started all 19 games this season. Irene Chaves is third in the league with 82 assists while Methlyn Onogomuho leads the team with 30 steals.

Coaches: Hawai'i head coach Laura Beeman has a 45-35 record in her third season at UH. Prior tocoming to the Rainbow Wahine, Beeman compiled a 390-110 record as the head coach at Mt. SanAntonio JC. UC Irvine head coach Doug Oliver is in his third season as well. He has a 29-53 overallrecord with the Anteaters.
Series History: Hawai'i holds a 24-8 record against the Anteaters. Last year, UH won in convincingfashion, 85-59 at home (Jan. 25, 2014) but squeaked out a one-point win on the road, 55-54 (Feb.20, 2014).
