HONOLULU - The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine stunned No. 29 Kentucky with a 4-3 win in their first dual match of the season. The 'Bows were unable to capture the doubles point and fell behind 3-1 early. But the 'Bows bounced back to take the final three singles matches to secure the victory at the UH Tennis Complex on Tuesday night.

In doubles action, the UH duo of Sarah Gealer and Cindy Nguyen fell to Kentucky's Taylor Lederman and Nadia Ravita 6-2. Freshmen Viktoria Malova and Junior Paulina Petriskova gave it their all on the No. 2-court against Adachi and Kelsey Dieters, but fell in a close match, 6-4 to give the Wildcat's the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.

The Rainbow Wahine were able to turn it around in singles action. After falling in the first singles match, UH's Malova came up with the first point for the Rainbow Wahine by defeating Kelsey Dieters 6-3, 6-3. At that point, the Wildcat's had a commanding 3-1 lead, but that did not deter the Rainbow Wahine. Nguyen battled through a tough three-setter against Ravita. The first two sets came down to tie breakers with Nguyen winning the first 7-6 (4) and Ravita taking the second, 6-7 (7). But in the third setn, Nguyen left no doubt and cruised to a 6-0 win in the deciding set. Senior Martina Kostalova also had a three-set thriller against Kentucky's Adachi. Kostalova won the first set easily 6-2, but Adachi fought back to win the second set in a tiebreak 7-6 (3). But it was all Kostalova when she dominated the third set, 6-1 to knot the team score at 3-3. It all came down to the No. 5 singles match between Petriskova and the Wildcats' Edmee Morin-Kougoucheff. Petriskova fought her way through the first set, winning in the tiebreak 7-6 (4). But Kentucky's Morin-Kougoucheff responded back with a second set win of 6-4. The match hinged on the third set, but Petriskova's hard-hitting forehands and backhands gave her the win to lift Hawai'i over Kentucky, 4-3.

Next up for Hawai'i is No. 25 Ole Miss on Friday, Jan. 16 at 3:00 pm at the UH Tennis Complex.
