Game NotesThe University of Hawai'i women's soccer team begins Big West Conference play with a pair of matches this week at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine host Cal State Fullerton on Thrusday, Oct. 2 at 7:00 pm. before taking on UC Riverside on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 5:00 p.m.
UH, which entered the NSCAA West Region poll at No. 9 this week, concluded a highly challenging non-conference schedule with a respectable 5-5 mark, including three wins in four matches during its most recent road trip. The Rainbow Wahine have been absolutely lights out on offense, averaging 2.20 goals per match, which ranks first in the Big West amd 39th in the NCAA. Ten different players have found the back of the net for UH, led by sophomore
Storm Kenui and freshman
Sonest Furtado with four goals each.
The Rainbow Wahine have also shored up their defense as of late. Hawai'i owns a 2.89 goals against average but surrendered just two combined goals—with one of those coming on a penalty kick—in its pair of wins versus Eastern Washington and host Montana at the Montana Invitational.
This year mark's UH's third season in the Big West. The Rainbow Wahine exceeded expectations in each of their first two seasons. UH finished in a tie for sixth in their debut season in 2012 and after being picked last in the preseason poll. In 2013, UH was picked seventh and instead finished in a tie for fifth. UH was picked fifth in this year's preseason poll, with Cal Poly earning favorite status.
The top four teams in the regular-season standings will advance to the Big West Tournament to be held in San Luis Obispo, Cailf., on Nov. 6 and 9.
