Box Score POCATELLO, Idaho – In a roller coaster of a match, the University of Hawai`i women's soccer dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to Idaho State Sunday afternoon at Davis Field. Amanda Elsworth scored three goals—including the game-winner with seven minutes left in regulation—to lift the Bengals (3-4) to a come-from-behind win.
In an offensive showcase, the teams combined for nine goals and 35 shots. UH (3-5) exploded for a season-high four goals but it wasn't enough as ISU scored three second-half goals to rally past the Rainbow Wahine. The four goals were the most UH has ever scored in a loss.
UH looked poised to win its second straight road match but twice squandered a two-goal cushion in a bitter defeat. The loss spoiled a two-goal performance by UH freshman
Sonest Furtado.
The teams combined for four goals in the first 13:35 of the match. Fast starts have been a trademark of UH this season and Sunday's match was no different as the 'Bows raced out to a 2-0 lead on goals by
Storm Kenui (4') and Furtado (7').
The Bengals, however, answered with a pair of goals over the next seven minutes and knotted it up on a Elsworth penalty kick at the 13:35 mark. Furtado notched her second goal of the day—and third in the last two matches—when she put UH up 3-2 in the 26th minute, a score that would hold until halftime.
The Rainbow Wahine extended its lead to 4-2 on a
Kama Pascua goal off a
Paige Okazaki assist just 11 minutes into the second half.
But again, the Bengals would not fold and scored three straight goals to close the match. Maria Sanchez scored in the 64th minute, followed by a pair of goals by Elsworth who completed a hat trick. The senior forward struck in the 76th minute, then put the Bengals over the top at the 83:55 mark. It was the first time all day that the Rainbow Wahine trailed in the match as they were unable to recover in the waning minutes of regulation.
The Rainbow Wahine remain on the road to play in the Montana Invitational on Sept. 19 (Eastern Washington) and Sept. 21 (Montana).
