T.J. Reyno scored the golden goal just 30 seconds into the first overtime period to lift the University of Hawai`i women's soccer team to a 4-3 win over Weber State in a non-conference road match Friday afternoon at Wildcat Soccer Field.
After finishing with a winning road record for the first time in 10 years in 2013, the Rainbow Wahine (3-4) picked up right where they left off, gaining a victory in their first road match of the year. UH was able to secure the win after Weber State (3-3) rallied from a 3-1 deficit to send the match into overtime.
UH got off to a quick start—as has been the case all year—when freshman
Sonest Furtado scored her first career goal just six minutes into the match. It marked the fifth time in seven matches this year that UH got on the board first and the third time they scored less than 10 minutes into the match.
Weber State evened things up on a Stacy Bair penalty kick in the 24th minute. But UH countered with a pair of goals in a three-minute span.
Storm Kenui scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Furtado, then shortly after UH was the benefit of an own goal to take a 3-1 lead.
The Wildcats took some momentum into the break when Mackenzie Peck scored on a header to make it a 3-2 score just a minute before halftime. The Wildcats then got the equalizer in the in the 72nd minute on a McKenzie Harrison score.
But UH would not be denied as a hard
Kama Pascua shot moments into overtime fell off the hands of WSU goalkeeper Sydnie Stokes and into the awaiting foot of Reyno, who finished from just two yards out. It was the second career goal for the sophomore forward and first career game-winner.
UH ended the match with a 14-11 advantage on shots.
Monk Berger started in goal for UH and finished with four saves.
The Rainbow Wahine will play the second of four straight away games when they head north to Pocatello, Idaho for a meeting with Idaho State on Sunday, Sept. 14. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. MT/9:00 a.m. HT.
