HONOLULU – Olivia Magill ripped a team-high 10 kills, Sarah Mendoza posted a match and career-best 24 digs and the No. 17 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team delivered a season-opening sweep of Ohio on Day 1 of the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-22, 25-23, 25-20.

Tai Manu-Olevao hit an impressive .304 on nine kills and Ginger Long added eight kills, also a career high.

Hannah Burkle posted nine kills to lead the Bobcats (0-1). Meredith Ashy added a team-high 13 digs.

Ohio took an early lead in the opening set, running off five straight points to move ahead 9-4. The 'Bows dusted off the cobwebs however and reeled off six straight of their own to even the score. UH appeared to have gained control after kills by Long and Kalei Adolpho (8 kills, 4 blocks) but the Bobcats rallied as the two teams traded points down the stretch. With the score knotted at 21-21, an Adolpho block and kill helped the 'Bows break away and win the opening set.

In set two, the 'Bows again trailed early before Manu-Olevao caught fire, ripping four straight kills to give UH its first lead at 14-12. Ohio would not go away and after a Jaime Kosiorek (4 kills, 5 digs) kill the set was tied at 18-18. Keani Passi's kill broke the tie and the 'Bows paced to the win and the two set lead.

The third set went back and forth until late in the frame when UH ran off five straight points to take a 20-16 lead. A pair of Magill kills started and ended the run and forced a Bobcat timeout. Ohio inched back into the set but the 'Bows prevailed in the end to complete the sweep.

No. 25 Arizona State handled San Diego State 25-18, 25-21, 25-14 in the opening match of the evening.

The tournament continues on Saturday with the 'Bows taking on Arizona State at 8:30 p.m. San Diego State and Ohio will play at 5:30 p.m. in the first match of the doubleheader.
