WAIPAHU, Oahu – The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine soccer team got off to a quick start but couldn't keep the momentum in a 5-2 season-opening loss Outrigger Resorts Shootout Sunday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Rainbow Wahine (0-1) struck first just eight minutes into the match on a goal by
Alexis Colacchio, but the Sun Devils scored five unanswered goals to easily pull away. ASU held a 2-1 lead at the break before scoring three second-half goals on a re-tooled UH backline that is replacing three veteran starters from last season. Freshman Aly Moon led the way for ASU with her first career hat trick, while adding an assist.
Any questions about a lack of firepower—with UH's two leading scorers out in
Tiana Fujimoto and
Kama Pascua—were quickly answered when UH found the back of the goal less than eight minutes into the match on a beautiful combination play. After a
Ryan Daniel throw-in,
Krystal Pascua flicked the ball to Colacchio who nailed a low-liner from inside the box that bounced off the near post and into the back of the goal.
ASU, however, answered in the 22nd minute as Moon sent a header over the out-stretched arm of
Monk Berger for the equalizer. The Sun Devils surged ahead in the 35th minute when Rachel Ometer took a through ball from Moon and sent a low-liner far post to make it 2-1.
The Sun Devils pulled away in the second half, taking advantage of three UH defensive miscues. Moon scored a pair of goals in a two-minute span to complete her hat trick, while Tommi Goodman completed the ASU scoring in the 77th minute.
Lauren Takai gave a large UH crowd something to cheer about in the waning moments of thematch when she nailed home a rebound shot after a
Storm Kenui free kick in the 88th minute. It was the first career goal for the sophomore from Waipahu.
UH will conclude the Outrigger Resorts Shootout on Monday when it faces Texas. Kickoff is at 5:00 p.m.
