Kaleigh Morrison is in second place in the heptathlon at the Big West Conference Championships following the first four disciplines Friday at UC Davis' Toomey Field & Woody Wilson Track.
Morrison, who finished seventh in the event last year, totaled 3,010 points, 18 behind first day leader Danielle Littleton of UC Riverside. UH sophomore
Kayla Kirk is in 15
th place with 2,324 points.
Morrison, a senior from Tigard, Ore., began the day with a PR time of 14.52 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, third-best on the day. She then posted the best high jump of 5-6 (1.68m) and threw the third-best shot put mark of 33-8.75 (10.28m) to momentarily take the lead. With the 200-meters rounding out the day's events, Morrison clocked in at 26.83 seconds.
Kirk's best showing was in the 200-meters, where she finished second in her heat and fifth overall in 26.67 seconds. The 'Ewa Beach, O'ahu native also tied for ninth in the high jump, clearing 4-9.75 (1.47m).
Morrison entered the competition with the Big West's top mark of 5,186 points, which she set at the California Invitational Multi-Events. Last season,
Samantha Balentine captured heptathlon gold, UH's fifth gold medal in the event in the past eight conference meets.
The final three disciplines are scheduled for Saturday.
