Box Score (html)HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior baseball team gave up a season-high 20 hits en route to an 11-5 drumming by Long Beach State on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium. The 'Bows, still looking for their first league home win, fell to 3-14 in the Big West Conference and 19-27 overall. The Dirtbags improved to 11-6 in the Big West and 25-23 overall.
Scott Kuzminsky (4-6) was tagged with the loss allowing five runs on 10 hits in four innings of work. Kuzminsky gave up three hits to start the fourth inning before being lifted for
Quintin Torres-Costa.
Josh Frye (6-0) earned the win for the Dirtbags, tossing five and two-thirds innings while allowing five runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Colton Vaughn had a monster game for the Dirtbags, batting 4-5 with two runs and four RBI. Garrett Hampson and Ino Patron both added three hits and one run.
Kaeo Aliviado shined at the plate for the 'Bows in the losing effort, batting 3-4 with one run and one RBI.
Adam Hurley had two hits, one run, and two RBI.
The Dirtbags opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second inning. After back-to-back base hits, Vaughn pulled a Kuzminsky pitch down the left field line, scoring two runs and cruising into second base with a stand-up double.
The wheels came off for the 'Bows in the sixth inning when Long Beach State put seven runs on the board to take a commanding 9-0 lead. Back-to-back RBI hits by Richard Prigatano (2 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Michael Hill (2 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) kickstarted the big inning which included an RBI triple from Colby Brenner (1 H, 1 R, 2 RBI).
Hawai'i would not go away quietly though, putting five runs on the board in the sixth inning to cut the Dirtbag lead to four runs. Hurley and
Austin Wobrock (1 H, 2 RBI) both singled with the bases loaded to each score a pair of runs and cut the Long Beach State lead to 9-5.
The momentum would be short-lived however, as LBSU manufactured a pair of runs in the eighth inning to take an 11-5 lead. Vaughn hit an RBI double and later scored to push the lead up to six runs.
Hawai'i and Long Beach State conclude their series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
