Men’s Golf Heads West For Final Big West Tune-Up

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team will complete its regular season with the Transamerica/WFG Western Intercollegiate Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13 at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif.
 
Hosted by San Jose State, the Western Intercollegiate features five teams ranked in Golf Week's Top 25 – No. 5 California, No. 6 Stanford, No. 14 Texas, No. 15 Washington, and No. 21 Southern California. Rounding out the rest of the 14-team field is Arizona State, Hawai'i, Memphis, Oregon, San Diego State, SMU, UC Irvine, and UTEP.
 
Participants will play a total of 54 holes, 36 on Saturday and 18 on Sunday at the par-70, 6,615 yard course with an 8:15 a.m. PT shotgun start on both days. The format is play-six, score-five.
 
The tournament is in its 68th year and is the longest running college golf tournament west of the Mississippi. UH is a regular participant at the Western, having missed the tournament only several times in the last three decades.
 
Competing for the Rainbow Warriors are seniors Nainoa Calip and David Saka, juniors Ryan Kuroiwa and Brian Lee, sophomore Scotty Yamashita, and freshman Zachary Braunthal. Calip was UH's top finisher last season, tying for 23rd place with a 217 total. Saka and Yamashita also competed in last year's tourney placing 37th and 40th, respectively.
 
The Western Intercollegiate is the final tournament of the regular season for the Rainbow Warriors before the Big West Conference Championship Tournament, Sunday, April 28 through Monday, April 29 in Beaumont, Calif.
