Men’s Golf Grind Through Day One in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team faced a marathon opening day at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate, Monday, battling through 30-plus holes before play was suspended due to darkness.

Competing at the par-72 Tucson Country Club, the Rainbow Warriors currently sit in 14th place with a team score of +37. Despite the challenging field and desert conditions, the 'Bows showed resilience as the day progressed, looking to find their rhythm against some of the nation's top programs.

The second round was halted with most of the UH lineup having between two and five holes remaining. This unfinished business gives the Rainbow Warriors a chance to tighten up their scores early Tuesday morning before heading directly into the third and final round.

Leading the way for Hawai'i during this opening stretch is Nathan Szpakowicz, who is tied for 57th place at 5-over. Szpakowicz has five holes remaining in his round, which he's currently at 2-over.

Alec Hilgers has three holes left in his second round and currently tied for 71st at 10-over. Rounding out the scoring for the 'Bows are Dane Watanabe (+11), James Whitworth (+12), and Chris Salem (+14).

Long Beach State holds the lead at 21-under however four of its five golfers are still on the course. Host Arizona is the clubhouse leader at 19-under 557 followed by Arizona State (559) and Oklahoma (569). Individually, ASU's Pongsapak Laopakdee is the clubhouse leader at 9-under 135 however LBSU's Alejandro De Castro is 13-under through 31 holes.
