Photo GallerySAN JACINTO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team used a strong finish to conclude the first round of the Big West Conference Championship, Sunday, at The Country Club at Soboba Springs.
The Rainbow Warriors shot a combined 11-under over the final five holes to finish the first round at 290, three strokes off the lead held by Cal State Fullerton (287).
UC Davis is second at 289 followed by UH, Long Beach State (295), Cal State Northridge (295), Cal Poly (300), UC Irvine (301), UC Santa Barbara (303), and UC Riverside (304).
Senior
Nainoa Calip birdied three of his final four holes to finish at 3-under 69. Following a double-bogey at the par-3 No. 4 hole – his only blemish on the day – the Hilo, Hawai'i native finished his final 14 holes in 5-under par. Calip, who is in third place, is two strokes off the lead held by UC Davis' Matt Hansen and one stroke back of CSU Fullerton's Mark Anguiano.
Junior
Brian Lee birdied four of his final seven holes, including consecutive birdies at Nos. 16 and 17, to finish at 2-under 70 and is tied for fourth place. The Honolulu native had an up-and-round round which included seven birdies and five bogeys.
Senior
Tommy Yamashita and junior
Ryan Kuroiwa shot 75 and 76, respectively. Yamashita finished eagle-birdie-birdie to close out his round while Kuroiwa birdied Nos. 16 and 18, the closing par-5's which UH's five golfers shot a combined 9-under par.
Also competing for UH was senior
David Saka who struggled and shot 83.
The championship continues on Monday with the second round.
