INDIAN WELLS, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team held off Cal State Northridge, 4-2 to advance to the semifinals of the Big West Conference Tennis Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Friday morning. Hawai'i improved to 11-8 overall while both Cindy Nguyen and Martina Kostalova both won their 10th-straight matches en route to the win. It was Hawai'i's ninth win in their last 10 matches. The Matadors fell to 12-10 overall on the season. It was the second meeting between the two teams in less than a week with Hawai'i winning both matches. Friday's marathon match between the two teams lasted four hours and 34 minutes.
 
The Rainbow Wahine captured the doubles point right off the bat, with UH's No. 1 duo of Xenia Suworowa and Paulina Petriskova defeating CSUN's Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei, 8-2. On the No. 3 court, Hawai'i's Kostalova and partner Sarah Gealer knocked off Criss Rodriguez and Lorraine Cheung, 8-3.
 
In singles, No. 1 Nguyen led UH off with a 6-3, 6-3 straight-set win over Vivian Lin. But the Matadors then evened the match with No. 2 Hsu defeating Suworowa, 6-3, 6-1 and Jessica Warren holding off UH's Kesley Daguio on the No. 6 court, 6-2, 7-6 (6). Kostalova then gave UH a 3-2 lead by defeating Rodriguez in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. Gealer then clinched the match with a three-set victory over Jessica Warren, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. In the final match that went unfinished, Petriskova was leading Poei, 5-4 in the third set.
 
Hawai'i will now take on No. 2 seed UC Irvine on Saturday morning at 9:00 am (PT). The 'Bows will be looking to avenge their last loss on March 29 when the Anteaters edged out UH, 4-3 on the road.
