VIDEO: Rainbow Relays HighlightsHONOLULU – The University of Hawaii women's track and field athletes won six events while three athletes posted Big West Championship qualifying marks during the two-day Rainbow Relays meet at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.
The event also served as a dual meet for the Rainbow Wahine against Big West rival Cal State Northridge. The Matadors won the competition, 97-84.
UH athletes won events in the pole vault (
Robyn Morioka), shot put (Alex Porlier-Langlois), javelin (
Kaleigh Morrison), 1500-meters (
Kevyn Murphy), 400-meter hurdles (
Samantha Esperanza), and 4x400-meter relay.
In addition, nine athletes recorded personal best marks, including Morioka's vault of 12-10 (3.91m), which set a new meet record. A total of five throwers established new PRs, including
Sabrina Mendoza in the shot put. The freshman from Burlingame, Calif., heaved 43-10 (13.36m), which qualified her for the Big West Championships.
Pole vaulter
Juli Powell also posted a Big West qualifying mark of 11-4.25 (3.46m), joining
Jacqueline Donovan, whose javelin throw on Friday qualified her for the championship.
Porlier-Langlois not only won the shot put event with a mark of 49-0.25 (14.94m) but set a new personal best in the discus, throwing 155-10 (47.51m).
Other UH athletes recording PRs included Makenzie Stang in the pole vault (10-10.25/3.31m);
Winnie Markowitz in the discus (119-8/36.49m);
Kayla Kirk in the javelin (81-11/24.97m);
Raion Black in the 200-meter (24.89s); and
Daphne Cobbs in the 100-meter hurdles (15.3s).
Counting this week's three new Big West qualifiers, a total of 18 UH athletes have qualified for 27 events this season. The Big West Championship is scheduled for May 16-17 in Davis, Calif.
