Women’s Tennis Drops Heartbreaker at UC Irvine, 4-3

Cindy Nguyen won her eighth straight singles match
IRVINE, Calif.— The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team (9-8, 4-2 Big West) had its seven-match win streak snapped by UC Irvine (12-5, 5-0 Big West) 4-3, at the Anteater Tennis Stadium in Irvine, Calif. on Saturday afternoon. The Rainbow Wahine gave the defending Big West champions everything they had, but came up just short in a hard fough match.

Both teams entered today riding win streaks. UH started the day having won their last seven straight, while UCI came in with an impressive eight-match win streak. Hawai'i entered the day just one game in back of league-leaders UC Irvine and Long Beach State who started the day both at 4-0 in BWC action.

The Anteaters would strike first capturing the doubles point which proved to be crucial. The two teams split the first two matches with UCI's No. 1 duo of Ali Facey and Franziska Goettsching defeating UH's Xenia Suworowa and Paulina Petriskova, 8-3 while UH's No. 2 duo of Cindy Nguyen and Rebecca Faltusz knocked off Sarah Gong and Brooke Schweyer, 8-3. UCI would clinch the doubles point with their No. 3 pair Kat Facey and Sarah Stadfelt edging out the 'Bows' Martina Kostalova and Sarah Gealer, a tough match, 8-6.

Hawai'i battled back to win three, three set singles matches--two by tie-breaker--but it was not enough as UC Irvine came through in the end for the win. Cindy Nguyen defeated UCI's Sarah Gong on the No. 1 court in a deciding three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The 'Bows' Petriskova earned UH's second point as she also won her match in dramatic fashion, taking the first set, 6-2. Petriskova then lost the second set, 2-6, but forced a tiebreaker set in which she came out on top, 7-6 (7-2). On the No. 6 court, UH's Faltusz played a tough match against Sarah Stadfeldt, winning her first set, 6-2, but dropping the second set, 2-6. She was unable to come back in the third set, falling 3-6, thus sealing the Anteater's victory. The 'Bows' No. 3 Kostalova gave UH its third point of the match in dramatic fashion against UCI's Goettsching, winning the first set, 7-5. After dropping the second set 4-6, Kostalova came back in third set that stretched into a tiebreaker set and came out on top, 7-6 (7-2).

In the loss, freshman Nguyen and junior Kostalova continued on their hot streaks with both winning their eighth straight singles matches.

Hawai`i returns home for one final home match against UC Davis on April 12. It will be Senior Day for UH's two, four-year letterwinners Kelsey Daguio and Suworowa.
