Pool Play Grid

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's sand volleyball team kicked off the Jack In the Box Rainbow Wahine Spring Challenge with pool play all day Friday at the Queen's Beach Sandbox. A total of 24 tandems from UH, Arizona, Hawaii Pacific, Nebraska and USC competed in eight different pools to determine seeding for Saturday's single-elimination brackets.
 
Rainbow Wahine tandems went a combined 7-3 with four of UH's five teams advancing to Saturday's 16-team Gold Bracket. UH's No. 1 pair of Karissa Cook/Brittany Tiegs, the No. 2 pair of Nikki Taylor/Katie Spieler and the No. 5 squad of London Chow/Tayler Higgins each went 2-0 in pool play. Meanwhile No. 3 Ginger Long and Ali Longo went 1-1 to finish top two in their pool to also advance.
 
The third-place teams in each pool are relegated to tomorrow's Silver Bracket.
 
Cook and Tiegs continued their tear, improving to 13-1 overall on the season. Meanwhile, the pair of Higgins and Chow wowed the Queen's Beach crowd with their stellar pair. The No. 5 tandem defeated Nebraska's top team of Mel Kiel and Justine Wong-Orantes in straight sets, then dispatched Arizona's No. 4 Sarah Seiber and Rachel Rhoades, also in straight sets.
 
The tournament will conclude tomorrow with single-elimination play in both the Gold and Silver brackets. First serve will be at 9:00 a.m. at Queen's Beach.
