TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team currently sits in 14^th place following the first round of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational Friday at the Karsten Golf Course.
 
The Rainbow Warriors shot an 9-over 293 while senior Nainoa Calip and junior Brian Lee are tied for 22^nd after each fired even-par 71.
 
Host and No. 32 Arizona State holds a seven-stroke lead over No. 46 Iowa. The Sun Devils shot 13-under 271 as a team while Jon Rahm holds the individual lead after a 9-under 62.
 
Calip, a senior from Hilo, Hawai'i, who tied for 68^th at the same event a year ago, carded four birdies including at No. 5 and 7, his 14^th and 16^th holes of the day, to get back to even par for the day. Lee, a junior from Honolulu, got off to a great start with four birdies through his five holes.
 
Senior Tommy Yamashita is tied for 53^rd at 3-over 74 while freshman Zachary Braunthal shot 77 and is tied for 67^th. Junior Ryan Kuroiwa struggled and shot 83.
 
The tournament continues on Saturday with the second round and wraps up on Sunday with the third and final round.
