NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team completed a perfect sweep of No. 13 Cal State Northridge, Saturday afternoon in the second of two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches at The Matadome. Set scores were 25-22, 25-19, 25-21.
The Rainbow Warriors (7-4, 5-3 MPSF) did not drop a set to the Matadors in the series and were in full command of the match on Saturday. Hawai'i trailed by no more than one point in the entire match and were only behind six times.
Sophomore outside hitter
Sinisa Zarkovic rebounded from an off-night with a team-leading 10 kills on .333 hitting. On Friday, the Belgrade, Serbia native finished with six kills but hit .000.
Setter
Joby Ramos distributed the set evenly for the match as three other Warriors finished with six kills or more. Middle blocker
Taylor Averill blasted seven kills at a .667 hitting clip and finished the series with only one hitting error in 18 swings. Opposite
Brook Sedore notched seven kills and two aces while outside hitter
Jace Olsen added six kills, six digs, and three blocks.
As a team, the Warriors hit .338 compared to .193 for the Matadors (3-6, 3-5), who were led by Andrew Freiha's 12 kills.
With Hawai'i leading 22-21 in Set 1, the Warriors pulled away with a kill by Averill and Matador hitting error for set point. After a Freiha kill, his ensuing serve went long and UH took the early lead in the match.
The Warriors led by three early in Set 2 and extended the lead to 15-10 at the media timeout. Moments later a
Nick West solo block on Greg Faulkner gave UH its largest lead of the set at 21-13 and the 'Bows never looked back.
Hawai'i took control of Set 3 with a four-point spurt following the media timeout. Back-to-back CSUN hitting errors sandwiched between kills by Averill and Zarkovic gave the Warriors a 19-15 lead. The Matadors closed to within two at 23-21 but the 'Bows closed out the match with a kill and block by Averill.
UH returns to Honolulu to host a two-match MPSF series with California Baptist, Wednesday, Feb. 12 and Friday, Feb. 14 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
