SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (2-6, 1-1 Big West) fell in a heartbreaking match, 4-3 against No. 61 San Diego (2-2, 0-0 WCC) on Friday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
 
The Rainbow Wahine struck first, capturing the doubles point to start the match. After dropping the No. 2 match, the 'Bows would come back with two straight wins. UH's No. 3 pair of Sarah Gealer and Martina Kostalova played well against USD's Idil Hacirafoglu and Janine Koleta, winning 8-5, to even the doubles matches 1-1. The deciding match on the No. 1 court featured the 'Bows' Xenia Suworowa and Paulina Petriskova against the Toreros Shani Blecher and Marta Stojanovic was a nail biter that went to a tie-breakerwith UH prevailing 8-7 (7-3).
 
San Diego and UH would alternate wins to open singles play. After UH dropped the No. 6 match, No. 5 Petriskova gave the 'Bows its first singles point as she defeated Koleta 6-1, 6-2. With the 'Bows No.1 Cindy Nguyen winning her match against Blecher, 6-3, 7-5, UH only needed one more singles win to seal the victory.  But San Diego won the next match, tying it 3-3.  UH's No. 6 Faltusz and USD's Haciraifoglu battled out the final match of the day to determine which team would emerge victorious. Faltusz played hard, but came up just short 6-4, 6-3, giving the Toreros the win.
 
The Rainbow Wahine will remain in San Diego and face San Diego State on Monday, February 10 at the Aztec Tennis Center. The matches will start at 2:00 p.m. PT.
