Men’s Volleyball Sweeps CSUN To Open Series

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team got back on the winning track with a straight-set win over No. 13 Cal State Northridge Friday in the first of two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches at The Matadome. Set scores were 25-20, 25-15, 28-26.
 
The 11th-ranked Rainbow Warriors (6-4, 4-3 MPSF) had it going offensively, hitting .360 for the match with opposite Brook Sedore and outside hitter Jace Olsen leading the way with 10 kills each. Sedore also tallied two aces and seven digs while Osen hit .533.
 
Middle blocker Nick West returned to the Hawai'i lineup after missing the past three weeks with a hand injury. The senior finished with five kills and no errors in eight attempts and led the team with six blocks. Fellow middle Taylor Averill had eight kills with no errors in nine swings along with four blocks.
 
Greg Faulkner led the Matadors (3-5, 3-4) with 10 kills on .615 hitting.
 
The Warriors broke open Set 1, scoring four straight points, which included a CSUN service error and two hitting errors, and a West-Sedore double block for a 22-17 lead. UH hit .520 for the set and rolled to a 25-20 victory.
 
In Set 2, UH strung together four straight points, including an ace by West for a 13-8 lead and after a CSUN kill, scored four more, which included a kill and ace by Sedore for an insurmountable 17-9 lead.
 
The Matadors scored the first four points of Set 3 and led throughout until the Warriors tied it at 19 following a kill by Olsen. The teams then traded two-point jabs and sided-out until Sedore's second ace gave UH a 23-22 lead. On Hawai'i's fourth match point, Zarkovic put away his sixth kill to end the match.
 
The teams play again on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. PT (12:30 p.m. HT) at The Matadome.
