Women’s Tennis Starts Busy Week On The Road

HONOLULU— The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (1-5, 0-1 Big West) will travel to southern California for their next three matches against Cal State Fullerton (Feb. 5), No. 61 San Diego (Feb. 7), and No. 48 San Diego State (Feb. 10).
 
The 'Bows are looking for a win against Big West foe Cal State Fullerton after falling to Long Beach State 5-2, and Washington State 4-3 in their most recent matches. Rebecca Faltusz led UH, winning both of her singles matches, defeating LBSU's Gabriela Tilkeridisova in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, and then swung past WSU's Dajana Ognjenovic 6-2, 6-2. The 'Bows Cindy Nguyen also picked up a victory in the No. 1 position against WSU's Elizaveta Luzina, edging her 6-4, 6-2.  Nguyen and Faltusz are leading the team in singles victories, both with a 4-2 record.
 
Cal State Fullerton (1-3, 0-1 Big West) is led by freshman Camille De Leon who has a record of 3-1 in dual singles action, playing in the No. 3 slot. Junior Jessica Pepa is currently on a two-match winning streak in singles, edging out Laura Eales of Long Beach State (Jan. 31) in three sets and then a straight-set victory over Beatriz Garcia Plana of Nevada (Feb. 1). In doubles action, the team of junior Kalika Slevcove and freshman Alexis Valenzuela are 3-1 as the No. 2 duo.
 
San Diego is currently ranked 61st in the nation. The Toreros are coming off a thrilling 4-3 win over Big West member UCSB on Sunday. The Gauchos captured the doubles point and then dropped the first singles match, but USD then rallied for their first home win. San Diego and UCSB were tied at 3-3, but No. 1 Shani Blecher came through with a clutch 6-4, 6-3 win over April Scatliffe (UCSB) for the team win.
 
San Diego State is currently ranked 48th in the country and are 3-1 in 2014. Most recently, this past Saturday, the Aztecs defeated UC Davis. 5-2. SDSU swept the Aggies for the doubles point, then won the first three singles matches to capture the match. San Diego State will take on UC Irvine on Feb. 6 and Pepperdine on Feb. 8 before taking on the Rainbow Wahine on Monday, Feb. 10.
