HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team won the battle at the net – and through the net – in a four set win over California Baptist Friday night, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23.
The Rainbow Warriors (9-4, 7-3 MPSF) won for the fourth consecutive time, a first since 2012, and moved into a tie for third place in the MPSF standings. UH overcame a hiccup in the second set in which a yellow card and ensuing delay enabled the Lancers to steal the game and even the match.
The match was delayed numerous times throughout the match as officials warned the teams about the excessive trash talking. CBU was issued a yellow card in the third set.
Junior opposite
Brook Sedore led the Warriors with a match-high 17 kills hitting .306. Middle blocker
Nick West slammed 10 kills and a career-high four aces while outside hitter
Sinisa Zarkovic added 11 kills and five digs. Libero
Kolby Kanetake had 12 digs.
Jackson Burge led the Lancers (3-9, 2-8) with 14 kills.
The Rainbow Warriors got off to a sluggish start in Set 1 before putting together four straight for a 19-15 lead capped by a Zarkovic block. Moments later, back-to-back solo blocks by Sedore and
Jace Olsen gave UH set point and one point later, West slammed one down for the set.
After a back-and-forth start to Set 2, the Warriors scored three straight for a 16-15 lead. UH led 21-19 after Olsen's solo block on CBU's Johannes Brink. After the play, Olsen was issued a yellow card causing a long delay. The Lancers took advantage and scored the next five points including back-to-back blocks for set point. After a Sedore line shot, Olsen was stuffed attempting to put away an overpass.
CBU jumped out to a 10-7 lead in Set 3 before the Warriors scored five straight for a 14-12 lead after a pair of kills by Sedore and a solo block by setter
Joby Ramos. UH extended its lead to 22-17 after a West-Olsen double block and finished off the set with Sedore's 13
th kill.
UH scored the first four points of Set 4 and held the advantage until the Lancers tied it at 19 after blocking Sedore. After a CBU service error,
Taylor Averill served up an ace for a 21-19 lead. The teams traded side-outs until Sedore was stuffed, tying the score at 22. Olsen's kill gave UH a 23-22 lead and Averill and Zarkovic teamed up to stuff Brink on match point.
The Rainbow Warriors will next travel to USC, Feb. 20 and 22 for a two-match MPSF series.
