HONOLULU – Back for the first time in three weeks in front of its home crowd, the 11
th-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team got off to a slow start but rebounded for a four-set victory over California Baptist Wednesday night, in the first of two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-10.
The Rainbow Warriors (8-4, 6-3 MPSF) extended their win streak to three matches and had it going offensively, hitting at a .386 clip and defensively, with 17 team blocks. Three players recorded double figure kills including outside hitter
Sinisa Zarkovic, who finished with a team-high 12.
Middle blocker
Taylor Averill notched a double-double with 10 kills and a career-best 12 blocks. The San Jose, Calif., native finished with only one error in 15 attempts and hit .667. Outside hitter
Jace Olsen tallied 11 kills, hitting .421.
Cal Baptist only suited up nine players for the match and played without three starters but hung tough, taking the first set 25-22. The teams battled back and forth before the Lancers scored consecutive points for a 22-20 lead. CBU made it 24-21 after a
Nick West hitting error and ended it when Olsen hit long.
Set 2 was much like the first but this time the Warriors got separation with a three-point spurt to take a 21-18 lead after two blocks and a CBU hitting error. Hawai'i sided-out and Sedore finished off the Lancers with his fourth kill.
The 'Bows broke open Set 3 after West stuffed Kristopher Johnson on back-to-back plays for a 17-12 lead. The Lancers never got closer the rest of the set.
UH opened Set 4 with five straight points including three consecutive blocks by Sedore and Averill. UH hit .500 in the set and totaled six of its 17 team blocks.
Johannes Brink had a match-high 14 kills for CBU (3-8, 2-7).
The team play again on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
