Hayden Gibson's goal in the 35
th minute proved to be the gamewinner as the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine soccer team beat UC Irvine 1-0 on Thursday night at Anteater Stadium. The 'Bows improve to 7-10 overall and 2-5 in the Big West Conference with UCI falling to 6-9-3 and 2-4-1 in league play.
The win was UH's first conference road win of the season and ended a string of back-to-back shutouts.
Monk Berger and
Erica Young each played a half in goal for the Rainbow Wahine. Berger posted two saves in her first half performances with Young recording a save of her own in preserving the combined shutout.
Gibson's first goal of the season couldn't have come at a more needed time as the 'Bows needed every bit of that attack to win the match. The senior midfielder received a ball at the top of the box from
Ashley Haruki and scored off a deflection past Anteater keeper Jenn Randozzo.
UCI posted three more shots on the evening (11-8) and had six corner kicks to UH's two, but it were the 'Bows who bent but didn't break to win the first of two road matches to close the season.
Hawai'i next travels to CSUN for its season finale. Kickoff is set for Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2:00 p.m. PT (11:00 a.m. HT).
