SAN DIEGO, Calif.-The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team kicked off the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional on Thursday at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.

In doubles, Hawai'i partners Rebecca Faltusz and Sarah Gealer defeated Grand Canyon's Nina Asanin and Alexandra Petralkova, 8-4 in their opening match of the tourney. Faltusz and Gealer will now face No. 1 Seed Terri Fleming and Catherine Harrison of UCLA on Friday, Oct. 17 at 8:30 a.m. UH's duo of Martina Kostalova and Cindy Nguyen had a bye in the Round of 64 and will face the No. 5 seed, Pepperdine's Lorraine Guillermo and Apichaya Runglerdkriankrai on Friday at 8:30 a.m.

Singles play started with the Round of 128. Faltusz fell in her first set to Kat Facey (UC Irvine), 0-6, and trailed in the second set 1-4. But Faltusz then mounted an epic comeback to capture the second set via the tie-breaker 7-6 (4) to even the match at a set a piece. Faltusz then held off Facey in the third and deciding set, 7-5. Kostalova dominated Anna Romeka of Loyola Marymount, 6-1, 6-0 while Pepperdine's Christine Maddox defeated UH's Gealer, 7-5, 6-2.

Later in the day, in the Round of 64, Faltusz went up against the No. 1 seed, Zoe Scandalis of USC. Scandalis defeated Faltusz, 6-0, 6-3. Kostalova advanced after her opponent, Dana Oppinger of San Diego, withdrew due to injury. Nguyen, the No. 8 seed, had a bye in the Round of 128 then held on to win her opening singles match in the Round of 64 over UCLA's Maia Magill, 7-6 (7), 6-2.

The Southwest Regionals continue on Friday, Oct. 17 beginning with doubles play followed by singles action.
