Box Score (pdf)SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly scored two first-half goals and didn't look back in handing the University of Hawai`i women's soccer team a 2-0 loss Sunday afternoon at Spanos Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 6-8 overall and 1-3 in the Big West with their second straight conference road loss.
Two days after a heart-breaking, last-second loss at UC Santa Barbara, UH looked to bounce back against the Mustangs (7-8, 2-2 BWC). But Cal Poly scored two goals in the first 20 minutes of action, a count that would hold for the rest of the match. The Rainbow Wahine were shutout for just the second time in 14 matches this year. The only other shutout came at home against top-ranked UCLA.
Cal Poly struck first in the 12th minute when Gianna Rosati scored on a header off a Megan Abutin corner kick. The Mustangs extended their lead less than 10 minutes later as Elise Krieghoff ripped a right-footer far post to give Cal Poly a 2-0 lead in the 19th minute. It was the league-leading 11th goal of the season for Krieghoff, the reigning Big West Offensive Player of the Year.
The Rainbow Wahine actually held a 13-7 advantage in shots at the half. The Mustangs, however, ended the match with an 18-15 advantage and consistently but pressure on the UH defense, particularly through the second half when they out-shot UH, 11-2. A number of Mustang shots bounced off the cross bar and post, while UH goalkeeper
Erica Young kept the 'Bows in the match with a number of spectacular stops. Young finished with five saves.
UH remains winless against Cal Poly in five all-time meetings.
The Rainbow Wahine next return home to host Long Beach State on Thursday, Oct. 16. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
