HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (1-5, 0-1 Big West) was edged out in an exciting match 4-3 against Washington State (3-1, 0-0 Pac 12) on Saturday afternoon at the Wailea Tennis Club on Maui.

Hawai'i fought hard in doubles and kept things close, but it was Washington State who prevailed to earn the doubles point to begin the match.  UH's No. 3 pair of Sarah Gealer and Kelsey Daguio began the match with a doubles victory, defeating WSU's Charlotte Koning and Dajana Ognjenovic, 6-4. The Cougars duo of Elizaveta Luzina and Lize Leenknecht then held off 'Bows No. 1 pair of Paulina Petriskova and Xenia Suworowa 7-5. The final doubles match that featured UH's No. 2 team of Cindy Nguyen and Rebecca Faltusz against WSU's Olga Musilovich and Maria Biryukova went down to a tiebreaker with the match tied at  6-6. Cougar's squeaked past UH 7-4, to give Washington State the doubles point.

Washington State would win another singles match before UH would strike back with two consecutive victories. No. 6 Faltusz would give the 'Bows their first singles victory with a win over the Cougar's Ognjenovic 6-2, 6-2. No. 1 Nguyen then defeated her opponent Luzina in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 to give UH to tie the match at 2-2. Washington State would win the next two matches to seal the win. On the No. 2 court UH's Suworowa earned the final victory of the day as she won the first set over Leenknecht 6-3 but dropoped a tight second set  in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4). Suworowa pulled out the win in the super tiebreaker, prevailing 10-4.

The Rainbow Wahine will next play a conference match on the road against Big West opponent Cal State Fullerton on February 5th in Fullerton, California. Matches will start at 2:00 p.m.
