HONOLULU – The 10th-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team came out flat and paid for it in a straight set loss to fourth-ranked Long Beach State, Thursday, at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-17, 25-20, 25-22 for UH's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener.

The teams play again on Friday at 7:00 p.m.

Taylor Crabb, the reining AVCA National Player of the Year, finished with a team-high 12 kills and two aces for the Beach (3-1, 2-1 MPSF). Ian Satterfield added eight kills on .500 hitting.

As a team, LBSU hit .363 while the Rainbow Warriors (2-2, 0-1) struggled to a .153 percentage. The Beach also out-blocked the Warriors 12.5 to 8.5.

Brook Sedore led UH with a match-high 16 kills while freshman Kupono Fey came off the bench and tallied seven kills. Midde blockers Davis Holt and Aniefre Etim-Thomas made their first appearances of the season in place of an injured Nick West.

The Beach got off to a torrid start in Set 1, scoring nine straight points as UH had five UH hitting errors before its first kill.  The Warriors fell behind by as much as 10, hitting -.107, as the 49ers cruised to a 25-17 victory.

Hawai'i got off to a slow start again in Set 2, falling behind 12-4. UH closed to within four at 14-10 and would not get closer than that until Hendrik Mol's ace and Zarkovic's kill pulled UH to within two at 22-20. Back-to-back kills by Satterfield gave the Beach set point and Zarkovic was stuffed to end it.

The Beach surged ahead 11-6 in Set 3 before the Warriors tied it at 15 after a five-point run. But just as quickly, the 49ers scored four straight and UH would only get closer than two the rest of the way.
