EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team notched its first win of the year in dramatic fashion with a 1-0 decision over Oregon Friday afternoon at Pape Field.
Kama Pascua's second-half goal proved the game-winner as UH improved to 1-2 on the year.
It was a rare road win for UH who entered the match having won just twice in its last 23 road matches. It was also just the program's fourth win over a Pac-12 opponent in 29 meetings. The 'Bows last win over a Pac-12 team came at USC in 2004.
Two true freshman came up big to help key the road win. UH survived a first-half onslaught thanks in large part to
Monk Berger, who earned her second career start and finished with seven saves. Pascua, meanwhile, put home the winning goal—UH's first score of the season.
UH started strong with a pair of prime opportunities in the first five minutes of the match, including a shot off the crossbar by
Krystal Pascua. But Oregon had their share of opportunities in the first half, including a pair of 1-v-1 situations. UH, however, denied the Ducks each time as Berger finished the first half with five saves. Oregon held an 11-7 shot advantage at the break.
UH finally broke through in the 61
st minute with a goal by Pascua. After a
Hayden Gibson corner kick,
Storm Kenui flicked the ball backwards to Pascua who put home a low-lining shot from close range.
That goal would hold for the next 30 minutes as the UH defense stood strong under Oregon's desperate pressure. The Ducks ended the match with a 17-14 shot advantage.
The Rainbow Wahine will next travel up the road to face their second Pac-12 opponent for the weekend when they visit Oregon State. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. PT (11:00 a.m. HT) and can be seen on the Pac-12 Network.
