TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona got off to a fast start and never looked back in handing the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team a 4-1 loss Friday night at Murphey Field. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 3-4 with its second straight loss and first road setback of the season.
Arizona scored a pair of goals in the opening 3:16 of the match to take an early 2-0 lead, part of a three-goal first-half. The Wildcats scored all three of their first-half goals off set pieces, including a corner kick and two free kicks. Jazmin Ponce scored two of the goals and assisted on the other to pace the Wildcats (5-1-1).
Down 2-0, UH got in the scoring column in the 17th minute off a counter attack as
Kama Pascua fired a beautiful shot from 22 yards out for her second score of the season. However, whatever momentum UH garnered was quickly halted when Ponce scored just seven minutes later to retain UA's two-goal cushion. The Wildcats took a 3-1 lead at the half and added a goal by Hannah Wong seven minutes after the break for good measure.
Seeking its third straight road victory against the Pac-12 after wins at Oregon and Oregon State, UH had little go for them against the Wildcats, who out-shot the 'Bows, 20-12, for the match.
UH will look to rebound as it travels up state to face Northern Arizona on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 12:00 p.m. PT (9:00 a.m. HT).
