WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team had its three-match winning streak snapped with a 2-0 loss to Portland State in the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic Sunday at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Two nights after exploding for four goals against Idaho State, the Rainbow Wahine (3-3) failed to find the back of the net, despite out-shooting the Vikings by a 20-5 margin.
The loss also prevented UH from capturing the tournament title. That went to Florida Gulf Coast (5-1-1), which won both their matches over the weekend, including a decisive 5-1 victory over Idaho State (2-5) in Sunday's first match.
Portland State struck first blood when Aurora Bodenhamer got a feed from Eryn Brown just inside the box and let loose a shot that slotted inside the upper corner of the goal. UH produced five corner kicks and four shots in the first half—including free kick by
Krystal Pascua which flirted with the goal—but were unable to get on the board.
UH kept the pressure on in the second half with 16 shots. Portland State withstood the charge and got an insurance goal in the 69th minute when Melissa Bishop scored off a Kayla Henningsen cross.
The Vikings were aided to victory by goalkeeper Caitlin Plese who finished with 10 saves on the night. UH also generated 11 corner kicks during the match, but were unable to capitalize on any of them.
UH next heads back on the road where they will play a pair of matches at Arizona (Sept. 20) and Northern Arizona (Sept. 22).
