HONOLULU – The 10
th-ranked University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team captured the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Challenge with a four-set victory over
Arizona, in the championship match Saturday night. Set scores were 25-20, 25-17, 22-25, 25-23.
The Rainbow Wahine (8-1) extended their win streak to six before a crowd of 9,000-plus at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH also captured its third tournament this season along with Chevron Invitational and Hawaiian Airlines Classic titles.
Emily Hartong led four Rainbow Wahine in double figures kills with 21 and her fourth double-double of the season (13 digs).
Kalei Adolpho (14),
Tai Manu-Olevao (11), and
Nikki Taylor (11) each posted career-highs in kills while libero
Ali Longo added a team-high 14 digs.
Arizona (7-2) was led by Madi Kingdon's 19 kills and 23 digs.
UH setter
Mita Uiato earned the tournament's Most Valuable Player award while Hartong and Adolpho were also selected to the all-tournament team. Uiato led the Rainbow Wahine to a .289 team hitting percentage compared to .259 for Arizona, who out-blocked Hawai'i 15.5 to 6.
In Set 1, UH jumped out to four-point leads at 5-1 and 15-11 but the Wildcats rallied to tie the match each time. With the score tied at 16, the Rainbow Wahine used a 7-2 run to build a commanding 23-18 lead en route to a 25-20 victory.
The Rainbow Wahine took an early 6-3 lead in Set 2 and were never threatened the rest of the way. UH built its lead to six at 13-7 and finished the set on a 7-2 run for the 25-17 victory.
The Wildcats forced a fourth set, out-scoring Hawai'i 6-1 in the final moments of Set 3 for a 25-22 win. The Rainbow Wahine were in command for much of Set 4 until the Wildcats erased two set points and rallied to within 24-23 after stuffing Hartong on consecutive plays. But the All-American would not be stopped for the third time as her 21
st kill ended the match.
Also named to the all-tourney team were Arizona's Olivia Magill, Portland State's Kaeli Patton and Northwestern's Stephanie Holthus.
In the first match of the day, Northwestern swept Portland State, 25-17, 25-17, 25-13.
The Rainbow Wahine will next travel to Wichita, Kan., for the Shocker Volleyball Classic, Sept. 19-21 where they will face South Dakota, Creighton, and host Wichita State.
