HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team closed out the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic with a three-set loss to San Diego on Sunday at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
Coming off a five-set battle with No. 21 Baylor on Saturday, the Rainbow Wahine fell behind early in each set, and the Toreros closed the tournament with a 25-16, 25-17, 25-18 win. UH closed the season's opening weekend at 1-2.
Cha'lei Reid led the Rainbow Wahine with 11 kills on 32 attempts. Libero
Victoria Leyva posted 10 digs on the defensive side.
San Diego hit .266 for the match while holding UH to a .078 showing. The Toreros came up with nine blocks and six aces.
San Diego went on a 9-0 run to take control early in the opening set. UH steadied as the set progressed but the Toreros hit .333 in the set to maintain control.
The Toreros pulled ahead again in the second set and opened up a 14-7 lead before UH strung together a 6-1 surge to tighten the gap. San Diego pulled away again with a six-point run to take a 21-13 lead and went on to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
After another slow start in the third, UH found a spark to go on a 6-1 run to tie the set at 10-10. Another extended run for USD, this time 10-1, pushed the Toreros ahead 22-13. UH put together a 5-1 run, including
Rachel Purser's solo block and two kills from Reid before San Diego closed out the match.
The Rainbow Wahine will host their second early-season tournament in the OUTRIGGER Invitational starting Thursday, Sept. 3. UH opens the tournament against Utah Tech and will face Loyola Marymount and UC San Diego over the weekend.
