WAIPAHU, O'ahu - The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team fell to No. 21 UCF 2-0 in the final match of the OHANA Hotel and Resorts No Ka Oi Sunday afternoon at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Two days after a disheartening double-overtime loss to UNC Greensboro, UH (0-2) came back strong by going toe-to-toe versus the nationally ranked Knights for much of the match. Hawai'i actually out-shot UCF, 10-9, for the game. The Rainbow Wahine, however, surrendered two goals in a five-minute stretch spanning the first and second halves and could never recover.
With the win the Knights (2-0) captured the tournament title, out-scoring their opponents 5-0 in the process. UH, meanwhile, dropped its second straight home game to start the year. It marked the first time since early in the 2011 season that the Rainbow Wahine lost back-to-back home matches.
The Knights got on the scoreboard first in the 41st minute when Alex Piercy got free in the box and netted a shot far post from 20 yards out. Holding a 1-0 lead at halftime, the Knights wasted little time in the second half when tournament MVP Tatiana Coleman slotted a through ball to Kayla Adamek who put UCF up 2-0 a little more than a minute into the second half.
The score held true for the rest of the match as the Rainbow Wahine fired six shots after the break, but could not break through.
In the first match of the day, Washington defeated UNC Greensboro, 1-0, in double-overtime.
UH will next head to the road for a pair of matches in Pac-12 territory at Oregon (Sept. 6, 4 pm PT) and Oregon State (Sept. 8, 2 p.m. PT).
