WAIPAHU, O'ahu - The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine opened the 2013 season with an agonizing loss, falling to UNC-Greensboro 1-0 in double overtime during the OHANA Hotel and Resorts No Ka Oi tournament Friday night at Waipi'o Penisula Soccer Stadium.
Â
Chesney White's header off a Georgia Brown cross proved the game-winner as the Spartans handed the Rainbow Wahine a rare home loss in the Michele Nagamine era. UH entered the season-opener having suffered just one loss in its last 15 home matches dating back to the 2011 season.
Â
UH lost despite thoroughly dominating the action against UNCG, the defending Southern Conference champions. The Rainbow Wahine fired 21 shots compared to just three for the Spartans, including a 19-2 advantage after the end of regulation.
Â
Still, UH acquitted itself well in its 2013 debut as five newcomers earned starting nods, including four freshman. Redshirt freshman Erica Young posted a shutout for more than 100 minutes in her first collegiate action as a goalkeeper, while true freshman Kama Pascua tallied a match-high five shots.
Â
Both teams entered the overtime period a player down after both UH's Krystal Pascua and UNCG's Rebecca Burrows were issued red cards with just two minutes left in regulation.
Â
In the first match of the tournament, No. 21 UCF blanked Washington, 3-0.
Â
UH will return to the field on Sunday for the final day of OHANA Hotel and Resorts No Ka Oi tournament when they face nationally-ranked UCF at 2:30 p.m. (HT). UNC Greensboro and Washington will precede the match at noon.
