DAVIS, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i Warrior tennis team won its third Big West Conference match of the season, beating UC Davis 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
The second-place Warriors improved to 6-10 overall and 3-1 in the Big West and are in midst of a critical road trip that will go along way in determining their seeding in the upcoming Big West Tournament. The match was the first of three conference contests on the trip.
UC Davis dropped to 6-9 overall and 0-2 in conference.
UH earned the doubles point after winning the No. 1 and No. 2 matches.
Jonathan Brooklyn and
Dmytro Kovalyov won at the one, 8-6, and
Nils Schuhmann and
Carter Lam captured the point with their 8-5 win at the two.
The Warriors won the first three finishes in singles play to clinch the win. Kovalyov got UH's second point on the No. 3 court with a comfortable 6-0, 6-3 win over Parker Kelley.
Danilo Casanova topped Adam Luba at the six then Schuhmann beat Hugo Verdi-Fortin, 6-3, 7-5, at the five to clinch the win.
The match was a homecoming of sorts for UH coach
John Nelson who won a Division II national title as coach of the Aggies in 1992.
Hawai'i retakes the court on Sunday against St. Mary's at 12:00 p.m. PT (9:00 a.m. HT).
