INDIO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i Warrior tennis team dropped the doubles point and mounted a rally in singles, but lost to UC Santa Barbara 4-2 on Thursday in the first round on the Big West Men's Tennis Tournament.
 
The Warriors, who entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed, finish the season at 7-13 overall while UCSB (10-13) moves on to the second round of the tournament played at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indio, Calif. The match was the second in a week between the two teams, with the Warriors beating the Gauchos 4-3 in Santa Barbara.
 
The Gauchos captured the doubles point with wins at the two and three. Jared Spiker and David Schuster lost on the No. 3 court to the UCSB pair of Andrew Riminton and Miles Seeman, 8-4 with the point clinched at the two when Benjamin Recknagel and Alex Bouillin beat Nils Schuhmann and Carter Lam, 8-6.
 
The Gauchos seemingly put the match out of reach with a pair of wins to open singles play. Spiker and Chas Okamoto lost in straight sets at the four and three as UCSB grabbed a 3-0 lead.
 
The Warriors made the match interesting when Danilo Casanova and Dmytro Kovalyov posted straight-set wins at the six and two respectively. Schuhmann then was in great shape to even the match on the No. 5 court against Alexander Gryaznov. After winning the first set 6-1, Schuhmann was up a break at 4-2 in set two, but Gryaznov rallied to win the set and then clinched the win for UCSB with a 6-2 win in the final set.
 
The match was the final one in a Warrior uniform for Dmytro Kovalyov, UH's lone senior and four-year letterwinner.
