HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team used its lethal serving to rally past No. 13 USC in five sets, Friday in the first of two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 24-26, 21-25, 25-22, 26-24, 15-9.

The 11th-ranked Warriors (5-13, 4-11 MPSF) snapped a four-match losing streak against their first opponent outside the Top 10 this season. UH tallied a season-high 12 aces, including four by Sinisa Zarkovic and three by Brook Sedore, and erased four match points in the fourth set. The 12 aces was the most for all MPSF matches this season and the second highest total in all matches in 2013.

UH played its 10th five-set match this season, setting a new rally-scoring record. The Warriors are 5-5 in five-set matches.

Hawai'i was led by Sedore and Zarkovic, who each tallied 16 kills. Sedore also added four blocks while Zarkovic added 10 digs for his third double-double of the season. As a team, UH hit .290, including an unstoppable .700 in the fifth set. UH also won the blocking battle 15.5 to 7.5.

USC (5-9, 5-9) was led by Tanner Jansen and Joey Booth, who tallied 20 and 19 kills, respectively. Henry Cassiday had 15 digs.

In the first set, the Trojans scored four unanswered for an 11-10 lead.  Moments later, the Warriors scored four unanswered of their own behind Taylor Averill, who had two kills and a block during that stretch, for an 18-15 lead. Sedore's kill gave UH set point at 24-23 but the Trojans rallied by scoring the final three points, the last two on blocks of Marks and Averill.

After surrendering the first three points of Set 2, the Trojans scored eight of the next nine points. USC kept piling it on with a 10-3 run – two of UH's points on Trojan service errors – for a commanding 18-8 lead. With Sedore at the service line, the Warriors scored four straight during a 7-1 surge to pull within 20-16. The Trojans pushed their lead to 24-17, before Hawai'i made one last rally to close to 24-21. Christian Rivera's kill ended it at 25-21.

The Warriors jumped out to an 8-3 lead in Set 3.  USC rallied all the way back and took a 16-15 lead after an ace by Micah Christenson. The Warriors retook the lead at 20-19 after an ace by Marks and back-to-back kills by Sedore. The teams traded side-outs until Averill and Marks stuffed Booth for set point at 24-22. On the next play, Averill stuffed Kirchner.

USC led 8-2 to start Set 4 until the Warriors slowly chipped away to close to within 17-14. A three-point surge narrowed the deficit to 20-18 and after Averill stuffed Feathers, the Warriors were down only one at 22-21. The Trojans scored the next two points for match point. But with Sedore serving bombs at the service line, UH erased four match points and his third ace ended it at 26-24.

Behind their serving, the Warriors jumped all over the Trojans in Set 5, leading 6-2. Back-to-back aces by Zarkovic gave UH an insurmountable 9-3 lead.

The teams play again Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
