LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team closed its road trip on Monday night with a 14-1 loss to UNLV at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. UNLV (10-3) used a nine-run sixth inning to put the game away and send UH to a 1-12 start to the season.
Andre Real and Pi'ikea Kitamura both batted 2-4 to lead the 'Bows, with Kitamura adding one run scored.
Starter Mark Shannon (1-0) had his way with Rainbow hitting and pitching en route to earning the win for UNLV. He allowed one run in seven innings and batted 3-5 with two runs and a game-high four RBI. Joey Swanner hit 3-4 with three runs and one RBI and Justin Jones added two hits, two runs, and two RBI.
The Rainbows threatened in the first inning but came up empty. Kaeo Aliviado (1-4) led off the game with a double then moved to third on a Real single two batters later. With two outs, Real stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position, but Kitamura popped up to shallow right field to end the inning.
The Rebels threatened in the first inning as well, but made good on their promise. Shannon helped his cause with an RBI-double to open the scoring, as UNLV pushed across two runs and led 2-0 after one inning.
The 'Bows got on the scoreboard with a run in the fourth inning. Kitamura doubled to open the inning before coming home on a Conner George groundout and cut the lead to 3-1.
Matt Cooper (0-2), after struggling in the first inning, battled through five complete innings before Lawrence Chew came in to start the sixth inning. Cooper left after allowing four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.
Chew struggled from the get-go, lasting just two outs in the sixth inning before being lifted for freshman Jon Lopez. Chew faced the entire Rebel order and left after surrendering six runs and handing UNLV a 10-1 lead. UNLV kept it going and scored four more runs in the inning and finish the scoring.
Hawai'i will have little time to rest as it opens a five-game series against Gonzaga on Friday, Mar. 8 at Les Murakami Stadium.
