STANFORD, Calif. – For the second consecutive week, University of Hawai'i senior
Amanda Alvarez eclipsed the school mark in the triple jump, this time breaking her own record she set at last week's USC Invitational with a leap of 42-9.5 (13.04m) at the Stanford Invitational, Saturday at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
The Vancouver, Wash., native set the previous mark last week with a mark of 42-2.25 (12.86m). On Saturday, she matched that mark on her first attempt and broke it on her second, which placed her second overall and first among collegiate athletes. Based on last week's rankings, her mark ranks No. 2 in the NCAA West Region and No. 6 nationally.
Alvarez also competed in the 100-meter finals, which was occurring during the triple jump competition. She managed to place eight with a time of 14.57 seconds. Sophomore
Zhane Santiago also competed in the finals and placed sixth, checking in at 14.34 seconds.
In the collegiate discus competition, freshman
Charlinda Ioane threw a personal best 137-6 (41.94m) to place eighth.
Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine on Saturday were
Joanna Franke-Kuhn, who placed fourth in the collegiate hammer throw with a mark of 173-2 (52.78m) and pole vaulters
Camie Kohashi (12-0.75/3.68m),
Cecilia Durocher (12-0.75/3.68m),
Robyn Morioka (11-7/3.53m), and Juliana Powell (11-7/3.53m).
The Rainbow Wahine return to Honolulu to host the Rainbow Relays, Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6 at the Clarence T.C. Ching Field.
