HONOLULU –
Conner George's two-run double broke a tie game in the eighth inning and the University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team beat UC Santa Barbara 6-4 on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium. The 'Bows (7-17) improved to 2-1 in the Big West Conference after winning two of the three conference games against the Guachos (13-12, 1-2).
Hawai'i twice rallied from deficits before
Adam Hurley tied the game in the fifth inning with one swing of the bat. With the count full, he ripped Gaucho starter Kenny Chapman's pitch over the right field wall for a solo homerun to even the score at 4-4.
After two scoreless innings by both teams, George came to the plate with
Kaeo Aliviado (0-3, 1 R) and
Marc Flores on base, and slapped reliever Greg Mahle's full count pitch down the right field line to score what proved to be the winning runs.
Flores provided the offense for Hawai'i, batting 3-3 with a walk and three runs scored. George (1-4, 2 RBI) extended his hitting streak to eight games with his eighth-inning double.
Matt Cooper worked seven complete innings for the 'Bows with
Jon Flinn (1-2) earning his first win in one and two-thirds innings of relief. Cooper allowed four runs on five hits with eight strikeouts. Mahle (4-4) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in two and one-third innings of relief work.
Robby Nesovic and Cameron Newell both had two hits and one run, with Nesovic adding one RBI. Chapman allowed four runs on six hits in four and two-thirds innings of work.
Nesovic drove in the game's first run to give UCSB an early 1-0 lead, but the 'Bows tied the game in the second inning when
Andre Real (1-4, 1 RBI) singled to drive in Flores.
UH grabbed the lead one inning later but Peter Maris put the Gauchos ahead 4-2 in the fourth inning with a three-run homer over the right field wall. That would be it for UCSB though, as Hurley's homer and George's RBI double lifted UH to the win.
The series concludes on Sunday with a non-conference game at 1:05 p.m.
