Box Score

HONOLULU – Dmytro Kovalyov staved off a Liberty rally with a match-clinching singles win and the University of Hawai'i Warrior tennis team beat the Liberty Flames, 4-3, on Thursday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. Hawai'i snaps a three-match losing streak to improve to 4-8 while Liberty drops to 9-3.

UH won the doubles point then won the first two singles finishes. Nils Schuhmann and Danilo Casanova won in straight sets at the five and six, respectively, to give UH a 3-0 lead but Liberty won the next two finishes to make it a one-point match. Kovalyov then secured the victory at the three when he rallied to top Dillon Segur, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.

The Warriors clinched the doubles point with a dominant win at the three, as Schuster and Jared Spiker teamed up to beat Siim Tuus and Stan Vaughan, 8-1. The win came after Kovalyov and Jonathan Brooklyn topped the Flame pair of Shea Thomas and Egon Samaai, 8-5, at No. 1.

Liberty got back into the match when Chas Okamoto and Brooklyn lost at No. 4 and No. 1, but Kovalyov stemmed the tide with his match-clinching win over Segur.

UH retakes the court on Friday for its second of back-to-back matches. The Warriors will play No. 63 Idaho at 2:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
